Whether you are new to the world of sailing or an experienced sailor, we have courses to suit you. We also run courses for those wishing to become assistant dinghy or dinghy instructors.
The sport is governed by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). Oulton Broad Water Sports Centre is an RYA-recognised teaching establishment. Once you have successfully completed one of the programmes you will have gained an award that is recognised around the world.
We have a range of craft available, including Bugs, Toppers, Picos and Wayfarers. This range of crafts will enable you to get the most from any of our courses.

Course viability
The viability of our courses depends on a minimum of two participants booking and the availability of our instructors. OBWSC reserves the right to cancel a course up to 7 days before the start date if either of these conditions isn’t met. In that case, we’ll offer you a full refund or the option to rearrange your course for another suitable date.

Whether you are looking for your first steps in learning to sail or an advanced sailing course Oulton Broad Water Sports Centre, offers a range of courses. As a certified RYA training centre, we have the knowledge and experience to deliver a range of sailing courses that will introduce you to the basics of steering, launching and recovering. Our more advanced courses introduce rigging, rope work, capsize recovery and safe sailing methods.

Your first time on the water sailing. This 3-hour sailing course will give you a fun introduction to sailing. Gives you some basic knowledge of rigging, launching and steering, ensuring you feel safe and confident on the water.
This five-day course will teach you basic sailing, and how to launch, steer, recover, and recognise parts of the boat. By the end of the course, you should be able to steer and understand basic principles.
This five-day course will teach you basic sailing skills, rope work and collision avoidance. By the end of the course, you should be able to tack and control boat speed and understand basic principles
Course Assumed Knowledge: Basic knowledge and steering ability to Stage 1 standard.
This RYA five-day course will teach you rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory. By the end of the course, you should be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.
Course Assumed Knowledge: Up to and including Stage 2 standard.
This RYA five-day course will teach you to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions. By the end of the course, you should be able to launch & sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.
Course Assumed Knowledge: Up to and including Stage 3 standard.
Your first time on the water sailing. This taster session will give you a fun introduction to sailing. Giving you some basic knowledge of rigging, launching and steering, ensuring you feel safe and confident on the water. We currently have no dates set, but we may be able to arrange a bespoke session tailored to your needs.
